Before You Generate a Kundli: Birth Time, Place & Timezone

A useful birth chart starts with reliable inputs. Learn which time to enter, how birthplace selection works, and what to do when your birth time is uncertain.

A Kundli is calculated for a moment and a location. Before interpreting a chart, check the date, local clock time and birthplace. A correct-looking chart can still be based on incorrect inputs.

Which birth time should I enter?

Enter the local clock time recorded at the birthplace. Do not convert it yourself to your current timezone. For example, someone born in New York should enter the time recorded there, even if they now live in Dubai or Gwalior. The calculator uses the selected place's timezone to resolve the historical offset.

Look first at a birth certificate, hospital record or a contemporaneous family record. A remembered time can be useful context, but should be treated as uncertain rather than silently made exact.

Why does selecting the birthplace matter?

The city selection supplies latitude, longitude and a timezone name. Two cities can share a name, so check the country and region before choosing. If the place cannot be resolved, this site asks you to correct it rather than generating a chart for a different default city.

Historical daylight saving can change the UTC offset. That is why the birthplace timezone and birth date matter together. Times near a daylight-saving clock change may be ambiguous and deserve an independent check.

What if the birth time is unknown?

A noon time is an estimate, not a recovered birth time. The ascendant and houses are time-sensitive; Navamsa and Dasha details may also change. If you enter an estimate, keep that uncertainty in mind whenever you read the results.

Do not make an important decision based on a precise-looking result from an uncertain time. A consultation can discuss uncertainty, but cannot guarantee reconstruction of a missing record.

    Why might another calculator disagree?

Compare the same inputs before comparing interpretations. Check whether both calculators use a sidereal zodiac, the same ayanamsa and the same house system. Small astronomical differences matter more near a sign or Nakshatra boundary.

Our free tool uses Lahiri ayanamsa and whole-sign houses. It is an educational calculation tool and does not claim independent certification or observatory-grade precision.

    A final check before interpreting

    1. Confirm that the day and month have not been reversed.
    2. Enter the birthplace's local time and check AM versus PM.
    3. Select the right city, region and country.
    4. Record whether the birth time is documented or estimated.
    5. Review the displayed inputs before reading the chart.

Your calculation runs in your browser. Place search contacts a geocoding service, and any report sharing is a separate choice. Start with a reliable input record; an interpretation should never hide uncertainty.
